Matthew Kochakian Designer who codes

Hi there! You have found my temporary home on the internet. I am busy constructing a new digital home, which you can see here. I am a self-taught product designer, full-stack web developer, and startup founder. I currently live in San Francisco in the Sunset district. Given the name, I thought it would be sunny, but I digress. I'm from Boston originally, and I studied marketing at NYU's Stern School of Business (Class of 2018).

I'm the Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder at Sail. We're a totally new kind of coaching company for men. Programs are based on areas of development that men often miss. Each one lasts four weeks and includes four 90-minute live coaching sessions over zoom with a cohort of 8-10 guys. Throughout the programs, there are challenges to practice learnings in the real world and drive accountability through social pressure. Over time, our goal with this new kind of coaching to fundamentally change the way the world thinks about health.

My other goal is to change the way we think – period. I am building a truly collaborative memex called Portal. When the forefathers of computing imagined what we would use machines to do, this is exactly what they imagined. And yet somehow, no one ever figured out how to build it. But I have, and I promise you: it works. I have spent more than a year on this project and I imagine it will be many more before it sees the light of day, but mark my words: Portal will change the way every one of us works, lives, and most importantly, thinks. It is my moonshot – my fifty year journey.

I write a newspaper in my spare time, called The Paper. New issues are published every few weeks and each one covers a single topic from history through the eyes of the newspaper at the time. Recent topics have included the impeachments of both Andrew Johnson and Richard Nixon, the invasion of Normandy, and women's suffrage. The publication has around 1,200 readers and if you want to join them, you can do so here.

Thanks for reading. If you are working on the future of cities wellness, or thought, please reach out!

Other stuff I've made:

Writing

I write in two places, and you're welcome to check out both. One is a daily blog (although I am not always consistent with that cadence). The other is a newspaper, a collection of really old newspapers around single topics, which I publish every few weeks. For your consideration, here are three blog posts and three newspapers that have been favorites among friends and readers:

Silicon City

In my free time, I'm constructing a city on the internet. I'm building this city because I wanted to build something insane in Minecraft, but also because I want to create my own "third place." My goal with this city is to create a public landmark on the internet that anyone can visit.
